Commercial Energy Questions

Answers Before You Commit Capital

01 Is the NSW commercial battery incentive confirmed?
The NSW Government's July 2026 Energy Security Safeguard position paper introduces BESS4 and BESS5 with a scheduled commencement date of 1 September 2026. Project eligibility and incentive value remain subject to implementation requirements and project-specific compliance.
02 Is it a fixed cash rebate?
No. The support is delivered through Peak Reduction Certificates. The financial value depends on the number of certificates created and their applicable market value.
03 How much incentive could our project receive?
It cannot be calculated from battery capacity alone. Battery power, eligible capacity, configuration, solar integration and scheme formulas affect the result.
04 Do we need solar to qualify?
No. The published settings state that solar is not mandatory for BESS4 or BESS5. A higher incentive applies to eligible batteries installed alongside new solar, while battery-only installations receive a lower incentive.
05 Can we combine the NSW and federal incentives?
Potentially, for eligible BESS4 battery systems below 100 kWh. Final eligibility must be confirmed for the specific project.
06 Is battery storage financially viable without the incentive?
It depends on the site. Zip Solar can model the project both before and after indicative incentive support.
07 Can a battery reduce demand charges?
Potentially, where the tariff includes demand charges and the system is correctly sized and dispatched against the site's peak-demand profile.
08 How much can commercial solar save?
The result depends on solar generation, self-consumption, electricity rates, exports, system cost and financing.
09 Will the system provide backup during an outage?
Only where backup functionality is specifically engineered. Standard grid-connected battery operation does not automatically provide whole-site backup.
10 Can we install solar now and add a battery later?
Often, yes. However, the initial design should consider future inverter, switchboard, controls, network and physical-space requirements.
11 How do we know the system is not oversized?
The recommendation should be supported by interval data, tariff modelling, solar self-consumption and battery-dispatch analysis.
12 What happens if our operating hours change?
Material changes in consumption can affect system utilisation and financial performance. Known changes should be included in the assessment.
13 What happens as the battery degrades?
The model should include expected capacity degradation, warranty conditions and potential augmentation or replacement requirements.
14 Can we finance the system?
Commercial finance and PPA structures may be available, depending on project scale, tenure, credit quality and commercial terms.
15 How long will the project take?
Timing depends on project complexity, data availability, engineering, network requirements, planning approvals, equipment lead times and site access. A project-specific schedule should be provided after initial feasibility.
16 Can multiple sites be assessed?
Yes. A portfolio review can rank sites by energy expenditure, demand exposure, physical feasibility and expected return.
17 How will performance be verified?
Monitoring should measure solar generation, battery operation, grid imports, site demand and agreed commercial performance indicators.
